Methoden

The CHARMED study is a prospective clinical cohort study enrolling participants undergoing either the Optimed lifestyle intervention program or bariatric surgery. All participants undergo a comprehensive baseline assessment prior to intervention and are subsequently re-evaluated at four follow-up visits over a two-year period. Clinical characterization comprises, but is not limited to: • Quantitative Sensory Testing (QST) for the assessment of somatosensory function • Nerve Conduction Studies (NCS) to evaluate large fibre integrity • Heart Rate Variability (HRV) as an indicator of autonomic nervous system function • Extensive metabolic, clinical, and anthropometric profiling

Zielsetzung

Obesity and (pre-)diabetes are associated with an increased prevalence of peripheral and autonomic neuropathies. Bariatric surgery often results in substantial improvements in glycemic control and metabolic parameters; however, its effects on peripheral and autonomic nerve functions are less well understood. Objectives • To evaluate pre- and postoperative changes in Quantitative Sensory Testing (QST), Nerve Conduction Studies (NCS), and Heart Rate Variability (HRV) • To correlate these changes with metabolic improvements, including HbA1c, body weight, lipid profile, and liver function status • To investigate differences between peripheral and autonomic nerve function
