Zielsetzung

In normal brain development neurons and glia cells are produced in distinct neurogenic zones by specific progenitor cells. The placement of the different types of progenitors provides an optimal and protected microenvironment for generation of their progeny. Little is known about the spatial organization of different type of cancer stem cells (CSCs) within glioblastoma (GB) and their distinct microenvironments. We aim to visualise different types of CSCs at different states of the disease, before and after therapy and especially after recurrence. Gaining knowledge about the structural organization of the tumor and its proliferative regions at different states of the disease is important to understand tumor development and enables comparison to regular brain development. This ultimately might help to identify anatomical hot spots of tumor cell production, which are crucial target areas for current (i.e. surgery, radiation therapy) as well as future therapies.
