Beschreibung der Arbeit

Art der Arbeit
Thema der Promotion Mitochondrial fitness - Impact of mitochondrial membrane composition through modulation of cardiolipin synthesis in health and disease
Voraussichtliche Dauer (in Monaten) 12-15
davon in Vollzeit (in Monaten) 9
Startzeitpunkt to be arranged individually
Methoden

The project will involve a range of methods, including basic biochemical techniques such as protein purification, Western blotting and co-immunoprecipitation, as well as advanced approaches like electron and fluorescence microscopy, lipidomics, proteomics, and molecular dynamics simulations.

Zielsetzung

Mitochondria are essential organelles best known for energy production, but they also play a central role in apoptosis. A key factor in both processes is cardiolipin, a unique phospholipid located in the inner mitochondrial membrane. Disruptions in cardiolipin composition or levels have been linked to diseases such as cancer and neurodegeneration, where impaired apoptosis and mitochondrial dysfunction are common hallmarks. This project investigates how the composition of mitochondrial membranes, shaped by nutritional intake, affects the function of Ups1, a lipid transfer protein essential for cardiolipin biosynthesis. By understanding how membrane composition and diet influences Ups1 activity and cardiolipin metabolism, we aim to gain new insights into the regulation of mitochondrial function and programmed cell death in health and disease.

Rahmenbedingungen

Strukturierte Betreuung

You will receive comprehensive training and close supervision from a teaching assistant and a postdoctoral researcher, with regular exchange and guidance from the group leader. From the start, you will be introduced to all relevant techniques and gain hands-on experience that will give you deep insight into biochemical research. As part of a young, international, and interdisciplinary team, you will benefit from a collaborative and supportive environment that values helpfulness and consideration

Anforderungen

We are seeking a motivated candidate with a strong interest in biochemical research in a clinically relevant context. The ideal candidate enjoys tackling complex scientific questions and eager to actively contribute to a relevant, cutting-edge project. To carry out the experimental work successfully, a full-time lab commitment of at least 9 months is required. Longer research stays or continued involvement beyond this period are possible and warmly encouraged.

Finanzielle Unterstützung

We actively support fellowship applications. A HiWi position can be offered depending on availability.

Autorenschaft

A publication in a peer-reviewed journal is intended.
